THE FIRST TRACE

This time… it wasn’t just a feeling.

It was something real.

Khushi stared at the papers again, her fingers tracing the same lines over and over.

There had to be a connection.

Something she was missing.

“Think, Khushi…”

she whispered under her breath.

Her eyes moved quickly across the documents.

Dates.

Names.

Places.

And then—

She stopped.

A small detail.

Almost invisible.

Something she hadn’t noticed before.

Her breath hitched slightly.

“This…”

A location.

Not far from her college.

Her heart started beating faster.

“This can’t be a coincidence…”

Without thinking too much—

She grabbed her bag.

“I just need to see it once.”

Across the city—

Ayaan stood near the large glass window, overlooking everything below.

The city looked small from where he stood.

Controlled.

Predictable.

Just the way he liked it.

“Sir.”

A voice interrupted.

Ayaan didn’t turn.

“Speak.”

“The file from yesterday…”

Ayaan’s expression didn’t change.

“Continue.”

“There was… a small inconsistency.”

That made him turn.

Slowly.

“What kind of inconsistency?”

The man hesitated.

“Something that shouldn’t be there… but is.”

Ayaan’s gaze sharpened.

“Show me.”

The file was placed in his hand again.

He flipped through it.

Calm. Focused.

Until—

He reached that same page.

This time—

He didn’t move past it.

His eyes stayed there.

Longer.

There it was again.

A detail.

Small.

But wrong.

Ayaan closed the file.

“Who handled this?”

The room went silent.

Names were exchanged.

Nervous glances followed.

Ayaan didn’t raise his voice.

Didn’t show anger.

But the tension—

It was enough.

“Find out.”

Just two words.

And suddenly, it wasn’t a minor issue anymore.

Meanwhile—

Khushi reached the location.

It didn’t look special.

Just another place in the city.

Normal.

Quiet.

“Seriously… this is it?”

For a moment, she almost felt stupid.

But something inside her—

Didn’t let her leave.

She stepped forward slowly.

And then—

She saw it.

A black car.

Parked nearby.

Still.

Silent.

Her steps slowed.

Something about it felt… wrong.

Familiar.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“Why does this feel…”

Before she could complete the thought—

The car door opened.

Khushi froze.

But before she could see clearly—

Someone stepped out from the other side.

Out of her view.

She took a step forward.

Trying to see.

Trying to understand.

But just as quickly—

The moment passed.

The car drove away.

Leaving behind nothing…

except questions.

Khushi stood there, confused.

“…What is going on?”

And somewhere else—

Ayaan stood still.

His mind not on the meeting anymore.

But on something else.

Something small.

Something that didn’t fit.

And for the first time—

He didn’t ignore it.
